More Coding More Girls Project has been supported by Science on Stage Europe

Science on Stage invited STEM teachers across Europe to organise a coding event or activity within the Europe Code Week. My project “More Coding More Girls” has been supported by Science on Stage Europe and SAP.

Project description:
It is known that in the field of coding there is little interest of girls students. According to the 2017 edition of the OECD’s Education at a Glance report, 3 of each 4 students who prefer IT are male students. In the same report, the ratio of female students undertaking studies in the field of IT is reported as 19%. It seems that it is not different in Turkey. However, it is vital that female students who study IT get quality education in this field and use technology efficiently. The aim of this study is to increase the interest of girls in ICT and coding.

The target group of this project is composed of 20 female students registered in the IT department of Atatürk Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in Altındağ, Ankara. The Project will work with age group between 15 and 18. The project will complete in 4 days between 15 October 2018 and 18 October 2018. Workshop will take place our schools Coding Lab.

Students will be taught coding with BBC:Microbit by Selçuk Yusuf Arslan. The workshop will take 3 hours. The students will conduct a project for 2 days. In the 4th day, an project exhibit will organized by students. After exhibit, we will organize a conference about importance of coding. The conference will be held in the conference room of the school and 200 students will attend.
